Razer Nommo Chroma Speakers Review

At the CES show in Las Vegas, USA, Razer released new PC speaker product lines: Razer Nommo, Razer Nommo Chroma and Razer Nommo Pro. Razer Nommo and Razer Nommo Chroma speakers provide a cost-effective option for balanced full-range sound. Razer Nommo Pro is a true THX certified 2.1 speaker that uses Dolby virtual speaker technology to provide an immersive gaming experience.

The Razer Nommo series speakers’ design concept helps players feel more sensitive to environmental factors, presenting them in stereo, ensuring that players know where the sound comes from so that they can react more quickly and accurately. That is, they have excellent sound localization. For PC users who use the audio system as a multimedia entertainment centre, the Razer Nommo Sirius series speakers also provide them with a balanced full-range audio enjoyment for watching movies and listening to music.

The main difference between the Razer Nommo and the Razer Nommo Chrom, aside from the RGB goodness is that the Nommo Chroma connects to your computer via USB and has a built-in DAC. In contrast, the Nommo connects to your computer via a 3.5-millimetre audio jack. They both have 3-inch Custom Woven Glass Fiber Drivers, and they both have rear-firing bass ports. The Razer Nommo Pro has two 3-inch custom driver units are also equipped with two 0.8-inch tweeters and a 6-inch independent subwoofer. At the same time, it is THX certified, supports Dolby virtual speaker technology and Razer Chroma magic light effect.

Razer Nommo Chroma Gaming Speakers Design

The Razer Nommo Chroma speaker uses a 2.0-channel stereo design. The left and right speakers have precisely the same shape. It consists of two parts: speaker unit and bracket. The shell is made of plastic material, and the surface is polished smooth and bright, which is easier to stain fingerprints. The Razer logo is designed in the centre of the speaker.

The sound unit has a cylindrical shape. The shell is round and has no edges or corners as a whole, and it can even be mistaken for a camera product. The speaker stand is tilted forward. The bracket and the speaker unit are entirely fixed, and no adjustable angle is provided.

The Razer Nommo Chroma speaker uses a custom-made glass fibre 3-inch large drive unit. This unit is a full-frequency drive unit with a frequency response range of 50-20000hz.

At the rear of speakers, designed with a bass port, can enhance the low-frequency dive and volume, and extend the low-frequency response. The connections on the back of the speaker, from left to right, are AUX input, DC power supply, a headphone output port, and connection interface of the left speaker. On the Razer Chroma base, you have two knobs, one for volume and one for bass. When you power them on, the right base shows you the current volume setting in green, and the left base shows you the current bass setting in blue. When the speakers are muted, both bases shine red. The light ring is also going to act like a volume indicator. so depending on how loud or low your volume is that will be displayed with a little light ring.

Through Razer Synapse, you can choose from 4 different light settings, breathing, spectrum cycling, static, and wave. You can also adjust the brightness of the effects, but customization here is little limited. If you want even more customization options, then you’ll want to fire up Synapse 3 on a PC. But I am pleased by the quality of the RBG lighting. The colours are very vibrant, and you can even see the RGB effect in almost every lighting condition. 

Sound Quality

Overall Performance

The Razer Nommo Chroma gaming speaker has two different connection methods. The 3.5mm interface can be used for mobile phones, while the USB interface is used for PCs or game consoles. Although there are two different access modes, the actual sound difference is not very obvious.

In Nommo Chroma’s music section, considering different types of music applications, Nommo Chroma also adds a BASS subwoofer control knob. When the bass subwoofer gain is maximized, the low-frequency performance will be relatively prominent, and the sound will be calm, full, and explosive. , Brings a full sense of shock. But in this way, the vocal playback will feel dull and lack empty inspiration. It is more suitable for listening to some rock and heavy metal music. The BASS intervention control is reduced, the sound quality has changed significantly, the mid and high frequencies are soft and clear, and the effect is quite similar to adjusting the equalizer.

They have a ton of different EQs. Through Razer Synapse 3, you can also choose from 4 EQ presets default, game, movie, and music. But you can also make your own. In game mode, the sound quality is more in-depth, the low-frequency dive more profound, and the sense of volume is abundant. In the music mode, the three-frequency output is balanced, the vocal playback is more durable, and the sense of boredom is improved. The sound field reverberation texture is outstanding for the movie mode, and the space atmosphere is better expressed. It can be seen that each equalizer mode has a different sound quality bias.

Game sound effects are the strengths of Razer Nommo Chroma speakers. Although there is no surround sound effect, the sound’s over-convergence from different directions is not bad. At the same time, the environmental sound effects are rich in details and texture.

The Bass

Despite the lack of a subwoofer, Razer Nommo Chroma provides impressive power as each speaker has a built-in rear bass port for a complete overall sound, even in the deepest roar of the game Some low-end vibration effects.

The base knob I thought it was a cool integration because especially with music, the bass will be a crucial component to many people. If you’re listening to hip-hop or listen to live electronic music or whatever, the bass is a huge part of the music. It’s pretty cool you can turn that bass knob up and down and this tie into their synapse software with their audio adjustments.

With the bass knob, what it does is it kind of self tunes your EQ. If you’re turning it up or down, it’s not going to complete round everything else out. If you’re lessening it, it’s not going to do some muddy. That was nice because it just adjusts automatically as I said, and it’s going to make everything else kind of proportionate to your music. So the highs, the lows, everything it’s going to equal out to keep your bass the best sound possible. 

Gaming Experience

For my gaming time, I don’t use speakers at all for gaming. I’m a headphones guy. But the Razer Nommo Chroma is a different experience, providing directional audio. Obviously, games are going to rely on some directional audio, and this speaker is incredible. I can hear things clearly from whether it’s gunshots or explosions in the distance to the footsteps.  

The volume they get decently loud when it’s at its highest. There was not a lot of distortion at all. In terms of that base adjustment, if you’re going to be playing intense competitive battlegrounds, I would turn the bass down a bit so that you can get more the treble and stuff to hear footsteps gunshots in the distance. If you like you know a little bit exaggerating explosions in the games, then sure turn the bass up. It’s going to sound good either way. I like how it’s not muddy and not distorted.
